What Now?
Thursday, April 12th, 2012I feel that Christmas gets all the news (rightly so) but I also believe that Easter should get equal or bigger treatment. Christmas is great because its the start of a beautiful story. We should celebrate the birth; thats what all people do is to celebrate births. That’s why sometimes Easter is harder to celebrate. Death isn’t often a time to be happy about but this is no ordinary death. This death wasn’t permanent. Jesus defeated death. He rose. He did exactly as He promised: HE REBUILT THE TEMPLE IN THREE DAYS! People thought He was crazy when He said that the temple would be destroyed and made new again in three days. People didn’t know that the temple He refeered to was His body and after being beaten and crucified, He was resurrected three days later. That is He rebuilt the temple in three days just as He said. All this being said we made it through Easter Sunday happy and joyful but the question is raised…. NOW WHAT? That is what we have to ask ourselves what do we do with this grace
we’ve been given? Jesus didn’t die mearly to defeat death; He died to give us the freedom of LIFE. Now what are you doing to do with this Gift?!?
The Gospel of John gives us this…
John 21:15-25
The Message (MSG)
Do You Love Me?
15After breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, “Simon, son of John, do you love me more than these?”
“Yes, Master, you know I love you.”
Jesus said, “Feed my lambs.”
16He then asked a second time, “Simon, son of John, do you love me?”
“Yes, Master, you know I love you.”
Jesus said, “Shepherd my sheep.”
17-19Then he said it a third time: “Simon, son of John, do you love me?”
Peter was upset that he asked for the third time, “Do you love me?” so he answered, “Master, you know everything there is to know. You’ve got to know that I love you.”
Jesus said, “Feed my sheep. I’m telling you the very truth now: When you were young you dressed yourself and went wherever you wished, but when you get old you’ll have to stretch out your hands while someone else dresses you and takes you where you don’t want to go.” He said this to hint at the kind of death by which Peter would glorify God. And then he commanded, “Follow me.”
20-21Turning his head, Peter noticed the disciple Jesus loved following right behind. When Peter noticed him, he asked Jesus, “Master, what’s going to happen to him?”
22-23Jesus said, “If I want him to live until I come again, what’s that to you? You—follow me.” That is how the rumor got out among the brothers that this disciple wouldn’t die. But that is not what Jesus said. He simply said, “If I want him to live until I come again, what’s that to you?”
24This is the same disciple who was eyewitness to all these things and wrote them down. And we all know that his eyewitness account is reliable and accurate.
25There are so many other things Jesus did. If they were all written down, each of them, one by one, I can’t imagine a world big enough to hold such a library of books.
HELP WANTED! SUMMER INTERN NEEDED
Wednesday, March 28th, 2012First United Methodist Church
Jefferson City, MO
Youth Ministry Summer Intern
I’m Chad, the Youth Director at First United Methodist Church. Our youth group, First United Youth, is looking for someone to spend a summer working with us. Our program is growing and changing and we’re looking for someone who is comfortable working in this kind of environment. I understand that an internship is about learning – about experience. I won’t be telling you exactly how youth ministry has to be done. I will, however, be learning and experiencing right alongside you. Don’t worry, it’ll be quite a summer. We’ve got summer camps and trips planned, and you’ll have to chance to have a large amount of creative input into the summer youth programs. Oh, and it’s full time! ($350 a week). There are many types of communities, but few with as powerful of a purpose as the Christian faith. But inspiring growth is hard. And creating a culture of self-think is even harder. Can you FORCE people love each other or God? No. But our church wants to create an environment for young people to wrestle with the scriptures and God. We want a place for questions. We want to show people what love looks like and why, exactly, it wins. Like John Wesley, the founder of Methodism, we want to balance heart and mind. If this reverberates with you, we want to hear from you!
Position Summary:
We’re looking for someone who is motivated and creative, who strives to love God and love people. We want someone willing to utilize the skills God’s given them.
Things that will make you stick out:
A familiarity with the scriptures
Conflict resolution skills
A contagious sense of excitement
A love for the church
The ability to express why you follow Jesus
A history of “local” mission work
A sense of humor!
Specific Duties and Responsibilities:
Assist in planning and executing summer programs.
Help with weekly youth group activities such as Bible studies and games.
Brainstorm sessions for creating new summer programs for certain age
groups.
Work with the church staff to implement youth-based trips and camps.
40 hour work week.
Take a Sabbath each week! (We value rest!)
Travel with our high school group for a week mission trip.
To practice loving God and loving people.
Teach/Lead for a number of weeks while Chris is gone.
(Public speaking/teaching will play a large role!)
Education Requirement:
High school graduate. (At least one year of college preferred)

Choose one situation and write your response.
Situation: A student is crying in the corner. You speak to them and they share how another student yelled at them. This student can get on other people’s nerves. What do you do?

30 hour famine one month later
Monday, March 26th, 2012
One month ago, twenty students and adults took part in the 30-hour Famine. We willingly went without for 30 straight hours relying on eachother and a little juice to get by. This was an oppertunity to see how a lot of the world deals with the issue of hunger. The first thing that the kids got to do was to sit and talk with eachother about what they thought this would be like. We talked about what we thought would be the most difficult and how we planned on making a difference. We then made our own t-shirts and signs with the 30-hour famine logo. Each shirt/sign was unique just like the kids. I felt it was key to let the kids express themselves because each of their expierence was going to be unique. The next thing we had the oppertunity to do was to go to the Food Warehouse and pack 1300″buddy-packs” for less-fourtunate kids in the Jefferson City School District. We got to work together in two assembly lines and packed them faster than it takes 4 groups usually take to do the same number. Those kids(and adults) were motivated to make a difference. We then headed back to the Farmer Youth Center for a treat. Not a food treat but an ear treat. We had the privledge to listen to M,The Mighty Quinn perform a concert.

Mike (or MTMQ) played for about an hour and was a great release and reward for everyone. We watched movies to wind down the night. everyone was tired but very much energized for the next day. The next day we decided that the town needed to know about this issue so went on a walk/march to the capital with our signs. We told anyone that we passed about the famine we were on and what they can do to help. We collected approx. $40 whilst we were out! The last thing we did during our time together was to break our famine with worship, communion and then a community meal that we prepared in the last hour( mean I know). Overall I think this was a great expierence for everyone. We learned a lot of how it feels to go hungry and we learned what it was to help others. Our goal was to raise $1700 and to date we have raised roughly $2503. We couldn’t have done it with out you–the church– and your amazing donations. Look forward to doing it again next year. –I’ve already signed us up! — IN HIM –Chad

Jesus Wept!
Monday, February 20th, 2012john 11:33-36 from The Message
33-34When Jesus saw her sobbing and the Jews with her sobbing, a deep anger welled up within him. He said, “Where did you put him?”
34-35″Master, come and see,” they said. Now Jesus wept.
36The Jews said, “Look how deeply he loved him.”
I really feel like this is the first time people can look at Jesus as truely being human; sure He had taking human-form and was walking around the Earth but this is where I feel that they saw Jesus have compasssion and react like his peers. In Jewish culture the time of morning after a loved ones death is called a Shiva. Shiva (Hebrew: שבעה) (literally “seven”) is the week-long mourning period in Judaism for first-degree relatives: father, mother, son, daughter, brother, sister, and spouse. The ritual is referred to as “sitting shiva.” Immediately after burial, first-degree relatives assume the halakhic status of “avel” (Hebrew: אבל ; “mourner”). This state lasts for seven days, during which family members traditionally gather in one home (preferably the home of the deceased) and receive visitors. It is a grieving process that involves what Jesus witnessed from his friends which was weeping. They weren’t just crying lightly they were full force sobbing for the loss of Lazerus. Jeus wept for not only him but He wept out of compassion for his friends that were truely hurting over their loss. I believe that Jesus still weeps for us when we are sad. On the flip side I feel that Jesus leaps for joy when we are happy! Jesus was/is 100% human and 100% God so He can handle the full range of emotions if you allow Him to be apart of your life. This song helped some friends of mine that were grieving a loss recently and maybe can shed some light onto your life if you are struggling with something right now too.
Agápe
Thursday, February 9th, 2012
C. S. Lewis, in his book The Four Loves, used Agápe to describe what he believed was the highest level of love known to humanity—a selfless love, a love that was passionately committed to the well-being of the other. This is the kind of love that the Apostle Paul writes in his letter to Corinthians in the 13th chapter where he writes,
1 Corinthians 13(msg)
The Way of Love
1 If I speak with human eloquence and angelic ecstasy but don’t love, I’m nothing but the creaking of a rusty gate. 2If I speak God’s Word with power, revealing all his mysteries and making everything plain as day, and if I have faith that says to a mountain, “Jump,” and it jumps, but I don’t love, I’m nothing. 3-7If I give everything I own to the poor and even go to the stake to be burned as a martyr, but I don’t love, I’ve gotten nowhere. So, no matter what I say, what I believe, and what I do, I’m bankrupt without love.
Love never gives up.
Love cares more for others than for self.
Love doesn’t want what it doesn’t have.
Love doesn’t strut,
Doesn’t have a swelled head,
Doesn’t force itself on others,
Isn’t always “me first,”
Doesn’t fly off the handle,
Doesn’t keep score of the sins of others,
Doesn’t revel when others grovel,
Takes pleasure in the flowering of truth,
Puts up with anything,
Trusts God always,
Always looks for the best,
Never looks back,
But keeps going to the end.
8-10Love never dies. Inspired speech will be over some day; praying in tongues will end; understanding will reach its limit. We know only a portion of the truth, and what we say about God is always incomplete. But when the Complete arrives, our incompletes will be canceled.
11When I was an infant at my mother’s breast, I gurgled and cooed like any infant. When I grew up, I left those infant ways for good.
12We don’t yet see things clearly. We’re squinting in a fog, peering through a mist. But it won’t be long before the weather clears and the sun shines bright! We’ll see it all then, see it all as clearly as God sees us, knowing him directly just as he knows us!
13But for right now, until that completeness, we have three things to do to lead us toward that consummation: Trust steadily in God, hope unswervingly, love extravagantly. And the best of the three is love.
A lot of people view this as the “marriage” verses but I will contest that it is how we are to treat everyone all the time. Jesus did not just come here to simply die for or sins rather He came here to show us how to live. Even more so in the way of what it is to love everyone. I will make you notice that He doesn’t say you are to LIKE everyone he says you are to LOVE everyone. That is a tough thing to wrap your mind around sometimes but I equate it to the diffence between happiness and Joy (see : http://firstunitedyouth.com/2011/09/08/a-life-of-joy-pursue-the-ce-not-the-ts/ ). Sometimes I get frustrated at the fact that we are given such a tough task to love everyone unconditionally all the time. If you feel this it is ok to feel that. But just because you feel that doesn’t mean you are to not continue to act of this task. It is a face that you will not like everyone or get along with everyone you meet but you are to love them no matter what happens. If they hurt you, Love them harder. Maybe through you’re unconditional love for them they will get to see a glimpse of God in you and then just maybe they will find hope in Jesus Christ.
This is a song by by Brandon Heath called “Love Never Fails”
a father’s love
Thursday, February 2nd, 2012This song is the epitomy of what God’s love is. No matter how dirty or messed up we think we are God will never see us as weeds He will see us as beautiful flowers. He should know what it is to truely love a child. He sent His one and only son to come to into the world and show us how to live, not just to die for our sins. I think the verse that is most often over looked is John 3:17 which follows the most overly quoted verse,John 3:16! What John 3:17 says is:
John 3:17
New Living Translation (NLT)
17 God sent his Son into the world not to judge the world, but to save the world through him.
